He moved to Melbourne in 1996. He is a Senior Lecturer in Architectural/Urban Design and History/Theory of Architecture at RMIT University, and a director of Baracco + Wright Architects. His teaching includes design studios, final year design thesis studios and history/theory courses. Since 1997 he has been coordinating and lecturing in the course of History of the 20th Century Architecture together with Peter Corrigan. From 1997 to 2005 he also coordinated the Final Year Design Thesis stream Pre Major + Major Project courses. He is currently the coordinator of the International Exchange Studies Program. In 2010 he has completed a PhD on the architecture of Melbourne architect Robin Boyd it is titled: Coexistence of Rational Definiteness and Irrational Oneness. An Investigation of Robin Boyds architecture and approach through a Heideggerian perspective. The thought and design approach of this Melbourne architect is discussed in relation to the theoretical thought of German philosopher Martin Heidegger and is investigated as characterized by two coexisting positions: a rational comprehension of the world through objective and definite entities, and an irrational oneness as a state of reciprocal co belongingness con fusion of these same physical and spatial entities. This work, which through extensive writing and redrawing of Boyds projects argues the existence of a dimension of continuity and con fusion of space between architectural, landscape, urban and territorial fields, is part of a wider and more general research framework that is consistently investigated by Mauro in different ways through his teaching, practise and publishing activities regarding both architectural design and history/theory of architecture. This research not only entails the consistent testing of design approaches that at a theoretical level critically resist the rational and mainly western process of representation/determination/objectification, but also indirectly lead to projects that at a more empirical level are characterized by a strong degree of sustainability. In light of their inclination to weaken boundaries between distinctive elements and therefore to focus on the design of relational spaces rather than the production of single objects, the range of projects continuously investigated and tested by this research approach are inclined to address, in different forms and at different levels, the current and urgent need to occupy and inhabit land in a considered and sustainable way. A consequential aspect of this research is the study and reconsideration of the recurrent everyday and transformations that consistently inform the architectural, urban, physical, historical, social and cultural environments of contemporary cities in general, and Melbourne in particular as a consistently investigated local case study. In parallel, as a correlated aspect of this research framework, Mauro is consistently interested in the analysis and critical revisitation of late modernist examples as different and yet analogous traditions closely involved with a notion of design that is strongly critical of the sense of determination and objectification that typically characterize an extensive range of Modernist positions. These late modernist references include the work of the Smithsons, Italian Neo Liberty, Brutalism, Metabolism, Radical Architecture and Melbourne architect Robin Boyd among others. ï»¿How to Make a Bib Necklace Using Recycled Beads Made From Magazines Your friends will never guess that this fun and colorful necklace is handmade with paper beads, created from recycled mail, maps, and magazines. There are many ways to make paper beads. I used the method I learned at camp long ago to create a dangling beaded fringe for this stylish bib necklace. Old magazines, catalogs, and maps are handy sources and great materials for paper beads, and add rich color to this bib necklace project! 6 to 10 full page images from magazines and catalogs or you can use old maps! clothes catalogs and fashion, design, or travel magazines are all great sources of images. They usually have full page photos or illustrations with rich color, and are printed on thicker paper. You can usually make at least 20 beads from an 8 1/2 x 11 inch photo or image. glue stick that dries clear pencil or a pen and ruler scissors or paper cutter a paper clip handy if you are doing this project with small children a few sheets of scrap paper to glue on Materials for Making Paper Bead Bib Necklace60 to 80 paper beads I used 40 inch long beads and 20 half inch beads see directions below smaller purchased beads these beads can be all one color and style to pull your design together, or different colors, styles, and sizes to add more variety and texture. package on head pins head pins can come in a variety of lengths. I always buy the longest I can find about 3 inches. You can always cut them shorter with wire cutters if needed. a necklace chain with open links and a fastener you will be attaching your beaded fringe through the links of the chain. You can either buy a length of chain or use an old necklace. I used a necklace with large links that I could attach multiple dangling beads from, but you can use a smaller link necklace too. needle nose pliers and wire cutters To Make Inch Long Beads1. First, choose about six to ten images to use for your beads. I wanted my necklace to have an overall blue design, so I chose images with blue in them. However, it is impossible to guess what color each bead is going to be when finished unless you use paper that is just a solid color. I would recommend using images with colors that you like, make A LOT of beads, then choose the beads for your necklace from your collection of finished beads. 2. Working with one image at a time, measure and mark up the right hand side of your picture at inch intervals 1 inch, 2 inches, 3 inches, etc.. Start at the bottom of your image and work toward the top. See diagram for reference. You can mark and cut your image across either length wise or width wise. Longer triangle pieces will create wider beads. 3. On the left hand side of your image, working bottom to top, make your first mark at 1/2 inch. Then mark the rest of the sheet at 1 inch intervals 1 1/2 inch, 2 1/2 inches, 3 1/2 inches, and so forth. 4. Using a ruler, draw lines connecting the markings on the left hand side to the markings on the right hand side. You should create a series of pennant shaped triangles. 5. Use scissors or a paper cutter to cut out your triangle shapes. Throw away the top and bottom paper pieces that are not evenly sized. 8. Then starting at the wider end of your triangle, slowly roll your paper as tight as possible. It may be a little difficult when you first start rolling your beads, but you want to make the hole down the center as small as possible. Try to keep the ends of your bead even so that the point will roll up to the center of your bead. It may be helpful you roll your paper around a pencil before you put any glue on it just to get it to start curling. If you are making beads with small children, you can use an unfolded paper clip as a tool for them to roll the paper around to form the bead. 9. A perfectly formed bead will have the center point roll into the exact middle in the length of the bead. This will created a evenly rounded side on your bead. However, if your beads comes out uneven, they are still beautiful and interesting! As you roll your beads, you should notice how the colors in your images are displayed on your finished beads. To make the most of the designs in my images, I marked my photos for inch long beads at the bottom and half inch beads at the top of each page. This left some unmarked paper in the middle that I threw away. 10. Some people use acrylic spray finish or acrylic liquid varnish to seal, harden, and protect their paper beads. I think this can be messy and is unnecessary. I have jewelry that I made from paper beads years ago, and the beads still have held together and look fine. Just be sure that your pointy ends have glued down firmly and completely. Making Half Inch Long Beads1. To make shorter and rounder beads, follow the instruction above however mark the right hand side of your image at 1/2 inch intervals 1/2 inch, 1 inch, 1 1/2 inches, 2 inches, etc.. 2. On the left hand side, make your first mark on the bottom at 1/4 of an inch. Then make the next markings every 1/2 inch start at 3/4 inch, then 1 1/4 inches, 1 3/4 inches, 2 1/4 inches, etc.. Follow the illustration for marking and cutting your smaller beads. Continue to follow the directions above for cutting, rolling, and gluing your beads. Making the Beaded Fringe for Your Bib NecklaceI chose to make about 40 longer beaded fringe pieces and about 20 shorter pieces for my necklace.

How To Make a Beaded Fringe Necklace

ï»¿How To Make a Beaded Fringe Necklace The beaded fringe necklace comprises two strands with one bead at its focal point. What makes it interesting are the fringes attached to the bead. Look fashionable while wearing a beaded fringe necklace on Bohemian tops. This necklace does not look simple to make at face value, but it can be made with a little jewelry making skill. Check out the procedures below and give making a beaded fringe necklace a try. Starting step: stringing and beading. Prepare two 35 inch cords as beading wires. Let them hold together for twining. Put three filler beads on the two strings. Place them at the center. String beads on one side. Start stringing beads on one side of the filler beads. Place seed beads and filler beads on each of the two wires separately. After filling the strings with alternating beads of approximately two inches, place another filler bead on both wires. String beads on the other side. Repeat step two, this time on the other side of the filler beads placed on the strings in step one. Keep adding seed beads and filler beads on both sides. Continue adding seed beads and filler beads on either side of the original filler beads until you cover the entire length but six inches of the strings from one end to another. Add another series of seed beads and filler beads. String beads on both ends of the beading wires. Separate the wires and place six filler beads on each wire four wires. Put one filler bead and six seed beads again. Add another seed bead and a bicone crystal bead each to both ends of the wires. Add even more beads. Add six seed beads on to separate wires, and then add a spacer bead on to non separate wires. Follow this sequence in adding the additional beads: furnace bead, spacer bead, filler bead, special focal bead and another spacer bead. Make the fringe bottom of the necklace. To make this, add seed beads to each of the four strings separately. Alternately put filler and spacer beads on each of the strands. Fill the four wires with beads until only a couple of inches are remaining from the whole of the wire. Tanzanite ultimately only really refers to zoisite from tanzania that heats to a neat purply color. That said for an engagement stone, you probably do want to go with a tougher stone. It going to get knocked around a bit and rubbed, and tanzanite is not nearly as durable as, say, sapphire. I think for rich color green, tsavorite is probably going to be the best option though still not as tough as sapphire for an everyday stone. It just hard to find a green sapphire that has the same bright/pretty color. Keep in mind too that going to jewelry stores is a mixed bag when it comes to colored stones. Their bread and butter is diamonds and the most well known colored stones blue sapphire, ruby, emerald, dark garnets. They often are pretty clueless about a lot of other stuff I had one jeweler look at me like I was crazy when I asked about zircon, saying WE DONT CARRY FAKE STONES. Idiot.

I realized then that electronic components could constitute an interesting group of materials from which to fashion jewelry, as the solders glittered with silver when they were done right. Capacitors, resistors, diodes, regulators, LEDs, transistors, and circuit boards constitute the collection of components that lend themselves to jewelry. It has been known around university electronics labs that students, especially the ladies, would depart from their hands on digital drudgery to design something creative to wear. Thus was born what was soon to be called geek jewelry. Populated circuit boards that failed in function could function as form for a pendant when attached to earwires or a neck chain with a bale. Such simplistic designs announced the designer as a geek getting a creative break from graduate studies. The pejorative term must have inspired more inspired designs. Those designers soon to be expert electronic engineers put some creativity into their designs by clustering or arraying the components in more intricate arrangements. This served to utilize the steely modern look of the electronic components without adding a geeky component to the lab born jewelry designs. It was when jewelry designers by trade noticed the high tech appeal of electronic components that they began to incorporate them into their jewelry couture. Recognizing the inherent appeal of such designs to current day conscious and technically oriented clientele, famous names, such as Italian designer Paola Mirai, fashioned recycled electronic components as features in their creations. Techno fashion became the newly accepted nomenclature for geek jewelry. In jewelry as in architecture, form follows function. ï»¿Elvis Presley Collectibles of the 1950s When Colonel Tom Parker became Elvis manager, he began to look for ways to get his sole client further into the public eye. In addition to advertising and promotional appearances, the Colonel signed a deal to merchandise a line of Elvis Presley collectibles. Here are some of the highlights of the collectibles created in the Elvis craze of the late 1950s. Elvis Presley LipsticksElvis Presley Enterprises was established in the summer of 1956 by Colonel Tom Parker in a deal with Hank Saperstein. Saperstein had successfully merchandised Wyatt Earp, the Lone Ranger, Lassie, and other icons of American pop culture. The Colonel and Saperstein approved 18 licensees, who produced about 30 products. Among them were Elvis Presley Lipsticks, which Saperstein claimed would be so popular they would walk off the counter. Shades included Hound Dog Orange, Heartbreak Pink, Cruel Red, Tender Pink, Tutti Frutti Red, and Love ya Fuschia. Each lipstick came attached to a card with a picture of Elvis and the tag line, Keep me always on your lips. The lipsticks are a popular collectible today, partly because the colors were named after Elvis songs. A tube attached to the original card is quite valuable, while the lipstick chart that lists all the colors is extremely rare. Elvis Presley SneakersAfter the Saperstein deal, fans could literally dress themselves from head to toe hats to shoes in Elvis Presley merchandise. Elvis Presley Enterprises licensed the Randolph Manufacturing Company to make Elvis canvas sneakers in 1956. Two different colors were available, a green and black pair and a black and white pair. The former are the most valuable, though sneakers in both colors are rare and highly sought collectibles. The tan colored box that the sneakers came in featured a photo of Elvis on the front and the back. The photo on the front was a shot of Elvis performing, which was the famous pose used on his first album cover. The photo on the back was a dreamy portrait, with Love Me Tender printed at the top and Elvis signature at the bottom. The box is now considered extremely rare. A pair of sneakers in the box is currently worth up to $4,300. Elvis Presley Record PlayerTwo models of the Elvis Presley Autograph record player were produced in the fall of 1956 by RCA Victor. Both were covered with blue vinyl contrasted with a light blue gray tweed material, and both were distinguished by Elvis signature, which was stamped in gold on the top. The more sophisticated model, which sold for $47.95, could play up to fourteen 45 rpm records automatically. Those on a budget could put down one dollar and pay one dollar per week at participating RCA dealers. A bonus was included with this model in the form of an Elvis three record EP set that featured 12 songs. The other record player was a four speed model that cost $32.95, or 75 cents down and 75 cents per week. The less expensive model came with a two record EP set with eight songs. Both record players came with an instruction booklet titled How to Use and Enjoy Your RCA Victor Elvis Presley Automatic 45 Victrola Portable Phonograph. Love Me Tender NecklaceSeveral pieces of jewelry were manufactured by Elvis Presley Enterprises in 1956, including a charm bracelet, a pair of earrings, a pin, and the Love Me Tender necklace. The necklace was issued to coincide with the release of Elvis first movie, though nothing about the design of the trinket relates to the film. Available in a gold or silver finish, the heart shaped pendant bore an engraving of Elvis playing the guitar. The card to which the necklace as attached is dark blue and white and contains a printed list that names four of Elvis songs from 1956. The necklace and card together make a nice keepsake commemorating that all important year for Elvis. The gold finish version is slightly more valuable than the silver finish to collectors today, and a necklace still attached to its card increases the value of the item by almost twice as much. The Pink ItemsIn 1956, Elvis Presley Enterprises issued an autograph book, diary, scrapbook, photo album, and record case as a set of must have accessories for every teenage girl. All of the items were dusty pink and featured the same black line drawing of Elvis with white highlights. The collectibles are commonly referred to as the pink items. The material used to make the items was a stimulated leather called leatherette. The drawing was based on the photo that adorned the cover of his first album, Elvis Presley. A small hound dog also graced the covers, which was a reference to Elvis biggest hit single of 1956. The scrapbook and photo album are the largest items in the set, but the diary is extremely difficult to find, making it the most valuable collectible. The Elvis Presley Hat and Head ScarfThe 1950s was an era of crew cuts and curly pony tails, and Elvis Presley Enterprises licensed several hats and scarves to take advantage of the fashions of the day. The head scarves, which were made of a blend of rayon and silk, featured a four color print of Elvis. The largest scarves measured 32 inches square and cost under $2. Womens kerchiefs and hankies were also available, as was a more exotic looking form of head gear the Elvis turban! Comfortable and casual, crew hats became popular among teenage boys. Even Elvis was known to don one on occasion. Elvis Presley Enterprises sold two different styles of gabardine crew hats. Both featured titles of popular Elvis songs in the wide band around the crown. The more common style included a portrait of Elvis inside a yellow burst; the other showed a picture of Elvis clasping his hands by his face. The latter is currently higher in value, and both hats inflate in value if the original price tag is still attached. The color cards sold in packages of five for a nickel, bubble gum included. Single cards sold for a penny. The complete set contains 66 cards, which are divided into two parts. The first set includes cards 1 46 and is referred to as the Ask Elvis Series. Each card in this part features a question for Elvis and his answer and signature on the back. Cards 47 66 depict scenes from Elvis first film, Love Me Tender, and feature details about the movie on the backs. All of the cards are colorized black and white photographs. Counterfeit reproductions of this set of cards were produced in black and white, which makes them incredibly easy for collectors to identify. Teddy Bear PerfumeTeen Age, Inc., came up with Elvis Presleys Teddy Bear Eau de Parfum in 1957, licensed by Elvis Presley Enterprises. The name was undoubtedly inspired by the success of Elvis hit single, Teddy Bear, as well as by the rumors that he collected teddy bears. The tall, slender bottle with a white cap featured a photo of a smiling Elvis from the mid 1950s. The perfume came in a plain yellow box with a look that was supposed to simulate cork. There was no writing on the box. However, the photo of Elvis on the label was clearly from the 1960s. Also, the bottle shape is square, and the cap is a metallic color. The date of reissue is not known, but the reissued perfume is worth considerably less than the original. Elvis Presley GuitarElvis was credited with starting a boom in guitar sales that reached mammoth proportions by 1957. Elvis himself generally used his guitar more as a prop than a musical instrument, but popular imagery of the era usually associated him with a guitar. That year, Elvis Presley Enterprises licensed the Emenee Music Company to manufacture several different toy guitars bearing Elvis name and likeness. The Teddy Bear and Hound Dog models originally sold for $12 and came in both four string and six string versions. The Love Me Tender guitar was more elaborate. The two tone plastic body measured about three feet long and came in a carrying case. The Love Me Tender model, which was sold only through Sears stores and catalogs, also included a small songbook and an automatic chord player. The four string versions of all three guitars are more rare and therefore more valuable. Dog Tag JewelryTo commemorate Elvis induction into the army, or more likely to exploit it, Elvis Presley Enterprises issued jewelry reproductions of his dog tags, complete with his proper serial number 55310761. The dog tag jewelry included two styles of bracelets, sweater holders, anklets, necklaces, and key chains. The jewelry featured a chrome finish over a brass base. Currently, the sweater holder is the most valuable piece. Several years ago, many boxes of dog tag jewelry were uncovered, and consequently, the jewelry is not as valuable as other Elvis collectibles. The dog tags remain popular items, however, because they represent Elvis stint in the service. In 1977, reproductions were produced, which were not made of chrome over a brass base but instead were tinted gold. ï»¿Diamonds Are Not Forever NILE Bargain hunters may be tempted to take a look at Blue Nile, Inc. NILE which is down roughly 75% from last years high. After all, the company has no debt and posted third quarter profits, as opposed to many retailers which showed losses. The company actually saw sales come in near the same levels as last year, which has some bulls optimistic that stability will remain with this diamond retailer. ZachStocks readers will note previous cautionary articles on Blue Nile, and have hopefully sidestepped the carnage. Looking more closely at the company earnings release, it is clear that trends are souring and quickly. In a press release from early November, management stated that the holiday season would be challenging. October sales were down 20% from last year, and that doesn account for the typical holiday rush that will likely be inferior to 2007 levels. In a sign of the times, Blue Nile has for the first time in its public history, declined to offer guidance for the coming quarter. Diane Irvine, CEO, stated that the environment was simply too challenging to give investors a reasonable expectation for sales during the third quarter. In an interview with Investors Business Daily, Ms. Irvine stated that the primary challenge is a lack of available credit for the company customers. The bulk of NILE sales comes through credit card purchases. That is certainly a difficult obstacle considering the fact that most card issuers are pulling back limits on outstanding cards and declining to issue new cards to potential buyers. Blue Nile actually offers third party financing on its website, but has seen approval rates drop due to tighter credit standards. The typical NILE customer is a 25 to 35 year old male purchasing an engagement ring. Unfortunately, this is one of the hardest hit demographic categories. At this time the typical buyer is opting for a smaller diamond, a less sophisticated band, and in general, a lower priced item. Bullish investors have long argued that the jewelry business caters to the wealthy and affluent, and should be relatively immune to an economic downtrend. But since NILE focuses on the lower end engagement type jewelry, the company customers are actually very sensitive to economic cycles. As I write, the stock is trading in the low 20 with 2009 earnings expected at $0.90 per share. Now, I understand that these expectations could change significantly over the next year, but a multiple above 20 seems unrealistically optimistic in my opinion. The company should survive as an ongoing business due to its low cost structure and sound financial footing. However, earnings will not likely rebound sharply as consumers will continue to be careful with spending even once the economic cycle begins to turn. Some may expect inflation to help the jewelry business out as inventories will likely rise as the purchasing power of the dollar declines. However, RBC had an excellent research report which, among other issues, pointed out that inflation would actually disadvantage NILE. The reason is that the company holds a relatively low level of inventory so inflation would increase costs just about as fast as it increases sales prices. Margins would likely remain stable, thus offering little help to a troubled retailer. Despite the lower stock price, I would continue to urge caution and steer investment capital away from this name. There may be a period where the value in NILE shares becomes compelling. But at well over 20 times expected earnings, I believe the risk far outweighs the potential gain.
